A couple months ago, on a rare visit to Seattle Plant Daddy, this Philodendron warszewiczi ‘Aurea Flavum’ practically tackled me off the bench and demanded to come home. I mean… how is this color even real?! Highlighter chartreuse, nuclear lime, whatever you call it — it stops you in your tracks.

This is a cultivated form of Philodendron warszewiczi, a species native to Central America, where it naturally climbs, sprawls, and throws increasingly dramatic foliage as it matures. The deeply lobed leaves are already impressive, but the real magic happens as it gains size — each new leaf is noticeably bigger than the last, with that signature Aurea coloring glowing like it’s backlit.

And yes, we all know I love me a big leaf.
This one is officially sizing up for a moss pole, and once it gets something to climb, all bets are off. Expect larger leaves, deeper lobes, and even more attitude.

A few months ago I shared this diva living its best life after I finally gave in and moved it to a terrarium. Consider this your official update: Begonia brevirimosa ssp. exotica continues to thrive… and multiply.

The original plant is still going strong, I’ve got two propagated plants ready for new homes, and two more currently rooting in moss like they’ve decided I might actually know what I’m doing.

Why the earlier drama? Brevimosa exotica is a New Guinea native with olive-green leaves, blazing metallic pink bands, and a shine that looks almost unreal. It wants bright indirect light, consistently moist soil, and humidity in the 60%+ range. Miss one of those and it will let you know—usually by dropping leaves or browning edges just to prove a point.

Yes, it can be grown ambient (I’ve seen the evidence and I remain determined), but let’s be honest—this plant shines in high-humidity environments. In a terrarium, it grows fast, tall, and starts demanding staking like the glamorous shrub it is.

If ambient growing continues to test my patience, I suppose a giant terrarium is in my future. Because those leaves. That color. That shine. Absolutely worth the attitude.

Alright plant people… forcing tulips is officially underway 😈🌱

18 days ago we moved from “trust the process” to “something is happening!”
Last fall, I told you to stash a few tulip bulbs in the fridge to fake winter (because plants are easily fooled and I respect that). That cold period flipped the internal switch that said “spring is coming.”

Fast-forward to today:
Those bulbs are now sprouting with purpose. Roots are actively forming and reaching down toward the water, while the shoot up top is stretching upward, fueled by all that stored energy inside the bulb. Keeping the water line just below the bulb is key — roots drink, bulbs stay dry, rot stays away. This is horticulture, not luck 🍃

What’s next?
Over the next couple weeks you’ll see:
• Root systems thicken and anchor
• Shoots elongate quickly
• Buds begin forming inside the leaves (the big reveal is coming)

Once buds appear, it’s only a short countdown to blooms — and yes, they’ll lean dramatically toward the light like the divas they are.

Winter is optional. Tulips have been notified.

This one has earned its place of honor.

Gifted to me over a year ago (thank you Anna Olson Hash), ‘Down Home’ and I have been through it — trials, tribulations, and a memorable battle with that nasty powdery mildew 😅. Last season it was literally pitched out into the garden with a live or die ultimatum. By fall, it had that look… the look that said “I’m not done yet.”

Fast forward to now and here we are — healthy, blooming, and just about ready to graduate from the grow room to a place of honor on the begonia bench, where visitors can enjoy it too. Redemption stories are the best, especially when begonias are involved.

• A cane-type hybrid begonia
• A hybrid created by Naron Stewart in Bulverde, Texas.
• Known for its dramatic foliage and those absolutely jaw-dropping blooms

These boxes might look like magic, but let me be clear… this isn’t amazing skill or dumb luck. This is determination. A whole lot of failures, more than a little frustration, a ton of Googling, and loads of advice and suggestions from generous plant people along the way.

What finally made the difference was finding the method that works for me — and sticking with it. Some of these cuttings are thriving and nearly ready to get potted up or gifted, others are still tiny babies with time to go, and a few rehabs are quietly staging a comeback. Every one of them earned its spot here.

With leaf cuttings set up, begonia seeds germinating, and life popping up everywhere, my makeshift plant room is officially a happy (and busy) place.

🎉 January 1st is here and so am I—just like I said months ago! Remember when I told you to grab a few tulip bulbs and trust me? Today’s the day we make good on that promise.

Let’s force some tulips to bloom in the dead of winter. Yes… flowers before Valentine’s Day are absolutely on the way. 💘🌷

🌷 How to Force Tulips Indoors (The Fun + Easy Way)

❄️ Step 1: Chill Those Bulbs (Non-Negotiable!)

Tulips need winter before spring.
• Place bulbs (in a breathable bag) in the refrigerator at about 40°F
• Chill for 8–12 weeks
👉 Hot tip from The Angry Gardener: Those bulbs you bought last fall and forgot to plant? If they’ve been hanging out in the cold garage or fridge… THEY’RE READY. 😏

🏺 Step 2: Choose Your “Vase” (Anything Goes!)

You don’t need fancy glass.
Use anything that:
• Holds water
• Has tall enough sides to support stems

Fill the bottom about ⅓ full with:
• Pebbles, marbles, gravel
• LECA, pumice, large perlite
• Whatever you’ve got!

✨ Optional pro move: Sprinkle a little crushed charcoal on top of this layer to help reduce algae.

🌱 Step 3: Set the Bulb
• Place bulbs pointy side up
• The flat bottom should sit just above the water
• Roots should touch the water, but the bulb itself should stay dry (no soggy bulbs = no rot)

• Once roots form and green tips appear… it’s showtime!

When I need to unwind, forget the chaos of the day, and do something that actually grounds me… I make potting soil.
Seriously. There’s something wildly therapeutic about building a mix from scratch and knowing exactly what your plants are growing in. 🪴

And let’s be honest—have you seen what the big-name soil brands are charging lately?! 😳
That sticker shock sent me straight back to basics, and my plants are thriving because of it.

This chunky mix was built with intention:
✨ Coco chips – hold moisture without turning roots into mush
✨ no. 4 Perlite – big, airy pieces that boost drainage and oxygen (happy roots = happy plants)
✨ Orchid bark – structure and airflow, mimicking how many plants grow in nature
✨ Charcoal – helps keep things fresh by absorbing impurities and improving root health

I use this mix straight for all my aroids, and for everything else I blend it 50/50 with Sunshine Mix no. 4—perfect for my watering style and busy life. I personally add worm castings at potting time for that gentle nutrient boost (not included in the mix so you can customize).

The best part?
It’s way more affordable than pre-bagged specialty soils—and if you’re in the South Sound, I’m happy to sell you a bag… or better yet, show you how to make your own. Sharing the plant love is kind of my thing. 💚

🚨 WINTER HORROR STORY: HOUSEPLANT EDITION 🚨

It’s December.
The doors are closed.
The heat is on.
The plants are supposed to be SAFE.

And yet…
I look over and THIS ABSOLUTE UNIT is sitting on my houseplant like he PAYS RENT.

Sir.
You are indoors.
On a leaf.
In winter.

How did you get here?
What do you want?
And most importantly…
ARE YOU ALONE?

I did not consent to a jump scare while admiring my foliage. One minute I’m appreciating a healthy leaf, the next I’m questioning every life choice I’ve ever made.

So now we must decide his fate:
🔪 Exorcism via shoe?
🫙 Capture & release (in the cold, like nature intended)?
🥃 Assume he’s drunk, lost, and just needs directions?

Name suggestions welcome because if he’s going to traumatize me in my own home, he deserves a proper horror-movie villain name.

Terrarium confessional time… 🌿😈

Earlier this year I built this terrarium with wildly grand plans. Carefully chosen plants. Dialed-in lighting. A fan. Dreams. Delusions. Main character energy.

Then reality showed up.
Plants failed.
Powdery mildew threw a rave.
Hope slowly withered.

When the cheap fan finally died, so did my patience. I looked at the survivors and basically said:
“Live or die… your life is in your own chlorophyll-covered hands.”

And wouldn’t you know it—that’s when Begonia brevimosa decided to WAKE 👏 UP 👏
Look at those leaves.
That color.
That attitude.

And can we talk about that Begonia U489 leaf?! Because WOW.
Even the Begonia dregei is out here giving I might actually like you now vibes.

So yes… many plants were sacrificed to the terrarium gods to get here. But plot twist:
✨ I even got 3 brevimosa cuttings currently growing ✨

Moral of the story?
Neglect? Tough love? Pure spite?
Apparently that’s the care plan brevimosa was waiting for.

Behold: my mighty handful of seeds—small in number, but BIG in potential!

While everyone else is out here dreaming of a white Christmas, this plant fanatic is dreaming of germination trays, grow lights, and the sweet suspense of “will they sprout?” 🌱✨

Just traded sun, sand, and tropical bliss for the cold, soggy welcome home party of the PNW—complete with a flood watch. Because of course. 😒🌧️
But hey… these seeds might just be the spark of summer I need to hold me over until the rains pass.

Final port day of this cruise had us soaking up the sun in Mahogany Bay, Roatán 🌴☀️
Mission: recharge the solar panels before heading back to the glorious rains of the Pacific Northwest.
Result: FULL POWER RESTORED. 🔋😎

Today was all about sun, beach time, and ocean relaxation — the perfect recipe to survive winter back home. This bear does not photograph well at the beach (built-in sweater problems 🐻😂), so no selfies… but trust me, the scenery did all the heavy lifting anyway.

And because I can’t go anywhere without adding more plants to the wish list…

Port #3 dropped us into beautiful Belize, and WOW… our final Mayan ruins excursion of the cruise was truly un-belize-able! 🌿✨
This last chance for ruins did not disappoint!

A cross-country bus ride brought us to Xunantunich, where we dove deep into Mayan culture, climbed the iconic El Castillo, and soaked in panoramic views of endless jungle and the winding Mopan River. Bucket list item: ✔️ And somehow… it’s only made us want to come back for more.

From the top of the temple to the forest floor, today overflowed with magic—history, wildlife, and PLANTS! The biggest patch yet of native Begonia nelumbiifolia (plant nerd heaven!), plus mahogany and allspice trees, and thicker, wilder jungle than any stop so far. Spider monkeys played overhead, roadside vendors pulled us into some spirited souvenir dickering, and a delicious local lunch fueled us before we spent sunset at the pier waiting for the tender back to the ship. 🌅🛳️

Tomorrow is our final stop—Roatán Island—for a full day of beachy relaxation before the ship heads home. Sun, sand, and one last tropical fix incoming! 🌴😎

Port Day 2: Costa Maya did not disappoint! 🌿🔥
Today’s adventure took us deeper into the jungle, where the Mayan temples of Chacchoben rise higher, the air grows thicker… and the plant life gets even better.

I climbed the ancient steps, wandered (okay… strayed a bit) down a jungle path before our guide reeled me back in 😅 — but can you blame me?!
Because the highlight of my entire plant-fanatic, begonia-addicted soul was this:

👉 I found ACTUAL begonias growing on the ruins.
Like… on the stones. In the wild. In their element.
Consider my mind blown and my heart full.

After the ruins, we wrapped the day at a beach resort where the drinks flowed, the sun was glorious, the ocean refreshing, and all four of us felt like absolute vacation royalty. Then a little shopping, flamingos, the walk back to the ship, and finally a sunset that wrapped the whole day like a bow.

🌴 2 stops down, 2 to go… Belize tomorrow!
Even more jungle, even more history, and hopefully even more horticulture.

But the real highlight? Chacchoben Mayan ruins. Ancient stones, towering history, and stories carved long before any of us were cruising these waters. And after soaking in the past, we’ll swap jungle boots for beach sand. 🏖️✨

From hopping the ferry at sunrise to wandering through ancient Mayan history, every step felt like stepping back in time. The plant fanatic in me kept staring into that jungle thinking, what’s growing in there?! The iguanas certainly didn’t mind posing for their close-ups. 🦎💚

We wrapped it all up with a little tequila tasting (when in Mexico… 😄), some delicious local bites, a group photo with our adventure crew, and a sunset that felt like it was painted just for us. 🌅✨

🌿 Plant Guy Goes to the Jungle… Again. 🌿
Today’s adventure: exploring the Mayan ruins of Tulum—but let’s be honest, the real moment was when my daughter caught me staring longingly into the jungle like it was the houseplant aisle at my favorite nursery.

After 2 full days trapped on a ship with zero plants, this was my first chance to reconnect with the green world. I swear I could feel the chlorophyll calling to me. 😆🌱

What’s growing out there? Bromeliads? Ferns? Mysterious vines ready to steal my heart (and maybe my hat)?

Caught this beauty outside the hotel this morning and of course the plant nerd in me went straight into detective mode. 👀🌱 If this is how day one begins, imagine me the next eight days: roaming the ship, exploring Mayan ruins, and side-eyeing every tropical plant like I’m on a botanical safari.

We’ll wrap it all up with an island beach day, so basically I’m living my best “The Angry Gardener Goes Tropical” life. 😎🌺 Consider me on high alert for fronds, flowers, and anything with roots.

Zone 8b is doing the most right now, so all the patio tropicals have officially checked into the Emergency Spa & Survival Center (aka my greenhouse). It’s a full-on leafy traffic jam in there — zero judgment allowed. 😂

Somehow, between dodging dangling vines and negotiating with drama-queen plants, I even managed to pot up a few babies… because why not squeeze in one more project right before heading off to an actual tropical vacation? Priorities. 🌺✈️

One bloom turned into a full floral takeover and now I’m standing here like a proud stage parent at a plant recital. The spots! The drama! The absolute audacity of this flower to look THAT good without even trying.

I may or may not be whispering words of affirmation to it daily.
I may or may not be rearranging the room so it gets the best lighting.
I definitely did not plan on becoming emotionally attached this fast… but here we are.

UPDATE: Remember when I said I was just casually dipping a toe into this orchid thing?
Yeah… about that. 😅

One bloom turned into a full floral takeover and now I’m standing here like a proud stage parent at a plant recital. The spots! The drama! The absolute audacity of this flower to look THAT good without even trying.

I may or may not be whispering words of affirmation to it daily.
I may or may not be rearranging the room so it gets the best lighting.
I definitely did not plan on becoming emotionally attached this fast… but here we are.

I tracked down Trachystemon orientalis ‘Kiwi Sun’… and you know I didn’t just stop there. I dug it, divided it, and tucked those golden beauties into their new home to create a full-on chartreuse carpet for spring.

Come April?
It’s gonna be WOW-level EPIC. 🌱💛✨

I’m looking to add a standing grow light or two to some darker spots in my home, and these three keep coming up: Barrina, Glowrium, and Sansi. If you’ve used any of them, I’d love to hear your experience—what worked, what didn’t, and which one you’d actually buy again.

A few years ago, I hit “upload” on my very first Watch My Garden Grow video—and honestly, I had no idea how deeply this journey would root itself in my heart. What started with a blank patch of earth and two lonely houseplants has grown into a full-blown plant-fueled passion, an obsession with rare and unusual beauties, and an ever-expanding love affair with begonias (send help… or more begonias 😄).

Along the way I’ve met incredible growers, collectors, nursery owners, and fellow plant dreamers—each connection sparked by the hunt for that one special specimen or by the joys of nurturing the plants already in my hands.

Now I’m ready for my next big transformation.

Of course, the only photographic “evidence” I managed to get before the sun disappeared is my Gunnera, all tucked in and ready for winter ❄️ (because apparently plants get their cozy season too).

Maybe next time I’ll remember to stop working long enough to actually take more pictures… maybe. 😅

🌞 Taking full advantage of this incredible November weather! I’ve been knocking out projects left and right the last couple days — feeling productive, but wow… there’s still so much more to tackle.

Of course, the only photographic “evidence” I managed to get before the sun disappeared is my Gunnera, all tucked in and ready for winter ❄️ (because apparently plants get their cozy season too).

Maybe next time I’ll remember to stop working long enough to actually take more pictures… maybe. 😅

Forgot to lift this elephant ear last winter and it returned…..not chancing another mild winter so off to the greenhouse she goes.

I’ve had good success either potting them up like shown here and storing in the greenhouse as well as removing the soil and storing in peat moss in a bin on the bottom shelf in the greenhouse …
I’ve also broken off little pups and grown them over the winter on a windowsill in the house.
What method have you had the best luck with?
